Executive Committee Meeting

June 11, 2010

 

The Iowa High School Speech Association met in an administrative session on June 11, 2010, in Storm Lake, Iowa.  Those present were Brown, Hopkins, Hansen, Guthmiller and Wendt.  Representing the State Office were Executive Director Ihnen and Therese Schimek, who served as recording secretary.

 

The meeting was called to order at 8:41 a.m.  The following are the results from the Advisory Committee recommendations.

 

Old Business

A) Committee appointees accepted and approved -

            Judge Certification – Cary Shapiro, Ankeny

            Large Group All-State – Cammy Newton, Saydel

            Coaches Convention – Natalie Saunders, Ottumwa

Individual Events All-State – Colleen Westergarrd, Akron-Westfield

 

B)  MEETING – brief discussion regarding National Federation Summer Convention activities.

Executive Director Ihnen reminded the committee that all experimental categories must be previewed at Coaches Convention as stated in the Constitution.  Several schools have volunteered to present.  There will be a five (5) minute time limit and it must be an original film. Executive Director Ihnen and Coach at Large Hansen will develop the rules and casebook questions for this category.

Recommendations to the Judge Certification Committee

56.  NE  Acting, Page 26, Article IX, Section 3

A note should be made to the Judge Certification Committee so that all judges are trained well enough to understand that contestants should not be judged differently if they do not fill the entire 8 minutes. This issue will be addressed this coming year at all JudgesÕ Meetings the day of contest.

 

57.  NE  Original Oratory, Spontaneous Speaking, Expository Address, Public Address, Review

Addressing the fact that students do not have to drop their head at the end of the performance. This is will be addressed with our judges at the judgeÕs meeting the day of contest contest. If possible, please add this as a general test question.

 

58.  Solo Musical Theatre – Motions 18 and 19 Judge certification to address the issue in Motions 18 and 19 on the judgeÕs test the morning of contest and bold acting on the test question.  The contestants will utilize the skills of acting and singing, and/or dancing.  All lyrics must be memorized.

 

Radio News  -- The Judge Certification Committee will encourage judges to be lenient in regard to editorializing.
