For immediate release

The Iowa High School Speech Association held the State Debate Tournament January 6th and 7th. The Tournament took place at the DMACC campus in Ankeny. Champions were from : Iowa City West, WDM Valley, Sioux City North, Des Moines Roosevelt and Winterset. Results are listed below:

Two Person... Champion- Mason Wang & Lauren Ernst, Iowa City West
Runner-up- Hunter Hurt & Parker Day, WDM Valley

Lincoln Douglas...Champion (Close out all 6 considered State Champions) Conal Thomas-McGinnis, Trent Gilbert, Brian Gu, TJ Foley, Siena Cabbage, and Evan MCKinney, WDM Valley

Student Congress - Champion...Elise Sturgeon, Sioux City North
1st Runner-up...Anna Senneff, Ankeny HIgh School
2nd Runner-up...Mitch Majure, DMS Roosevelt
3rd Runner-up....Claire Kallestad, DMS Roosevelt

Public Forum- Riggleman Division
Champion...Ellie Konfrst & Sophia Gustafson, DMS Roosevelt
1st Runner-up...Andrew Del Vecchio & Daequan Poole, Bettendorf
Galligan Division
Champion...Devyn Leeson & Charles Van Werden, Winterset
1st Runner-up....Sydney Baugh & Noah Percy, Norwalk


Sweepstakes Trophy- The Sweepstakes Trophy is given to the top school at the tournament. Des Moines Roosevelt and West Des Moines Valley tied for the championship and both are considered Sweepstakes Champions for 2017 for the IHSSA State Debate Tournament. Iowa City West 3rd, Johnston 4th.
